Bioregional Seal for Regenerative Businesses and Brands

The Sello Biorregional de Actividad Sostenible y Regenerativa, issued by the Centro de Saberes de la Biorregión de la Cuenca Alta del Río Catamayo (Vilcabamba BLC), is a formal recognition for businesses and brands that actively align their daily operations with ecological and social regeneration. Unlike fragmented eco-labels that track isolated metrics, this seal evaluates the complete operational footprint of an enterprise, ensuring that recognition reflects genuine, systemic contributions to living territories.

What is a Regenerative Seal?

Mainstream sustainability certifications often operate within a reductionist paradigm. They measure variables like packaging or carbon offsets while ignoring toxic supply chains, exploitative labor, or misleading marketing.

A global beauty brand cannot be labeled eco-friendly simply for buying carbon credits from monoculture tree plantations that do little to restore ecosystems, while simultaneously relying on harmful ingredients and extractive business models.

True regeneration cannot be compartmentalized. Guided by a panoramic, systems-based understanding, the Sello Biorregional assesses how a business interacts with its watershed, workers, customers, and local economy.

It rewards transparency, circularity, and reciprocity—not the illusion of sustainability that offsets harm while perpetuating extraction.

Three tiers of Certification

The certification is designed to be accessible, progressive, and practice-driven. Enterprises advance through three tiers based on verified regenerative practices: Empiric (minimum two practices, Pro (minimum five practices), and Master (ten or more practices). The Advanced tier requires at least one verified practice across all six evaluation categories, reflecting our commitment to holistic integrity rather than selective compliance. Monthly fees fund continuous verification, community education, and the bioregional network infrastructure

Applications are assessed across six interconnected dimensions: sustainable supplier networks, dignified labor relations (including employee ownership pathways and cooperative models), closed-loop waste management, transparent customer engagement, renewable energy adoption, and truthful brand communication.

The seal is intentionally sector-agnostic, welcoming restaurants, hotels, retreat centers, farms, personal care brands, retail stores, artisan manufacturers, traditional healers, and independent service providers.

Costs

100% of the funds collected from certified businesses are directed to the Bioregional Fund. These resources are not retained as administrative overhead; they are actively deployed to multiply the effect of regeneration across the territory. Every contribution directly finances ecosystem restoration, community education, and the operational infrastructure that enables regenerative commerce to scale. Your participation becomes a tangible investment in the living systems we share.

Tier 1 – En Proceso $10/Month
This tier recognizes businesses and brands that are actively beginning their transition. It is awarded to enterprises that have implemented at least two verified practices within the evaluated areas, demonstrating a clear and actionable commitment to regenerative principles.

Tier 2 – Pro $30/Month
Designed for organizations that have deepened their operational integration. This level is granted to businesses that have successfully implemented at least five verified practices, showing consistent alignment with ecological stewardship and social reciprocity.

Tier 3 – Master $50/Month
Reserved for enterprises operating at a systemic level. This tier recognizes businesses that have embedded ten or more verified practices into their core model, ensuring representation across all evaluation categories and reflecting a mature, territory-centered approach to commerce.

We understand that financial capacity and business stages vary. For new ventures, early-stage projects, or enterprises navigating temporary challenges, we offer flexible pathways and alternative arrangements to facilitate access to the seal. Our priority is to remove unnecessary barriers while preserving the integrity of the regenerative standards, ensuring that genuine commitment to the territory remains the foundation of participation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to receive the Bioregional Seal?
To qualify, a business must complete a structured questionnaire on its regenerative practices and provide supporting documentation or validation upon request. Monthly fees range from $10 to $50, depending on the certification tier achieved (Empiric, Pro, or Advanced), which corresponds to the number and breadth of verified practices implemented.

What happens if I don’t pay the monthly fee? Don’t I still deserve the seal then?
100% of the fees collected from the Sello Biorregional are reinvested directly into the bioregional organization, which funds restoration projects, community education, and network infrastructure. Rather than viewing it as a transactional payment, we invite you to see it as your active contribution to the regeneration of the territory and the planet.

What if I genuinely cannot afford the fee?
The fee structure is intentionally designed to be accessible and proportional to the value received. However, we recognize that new ventures or businesses facing temporary downturns may need flexibility. In such cases, we are open to discussing alternative arrangements, including service barter or in-kind contributions that align with the Bioregion’s current needs.

What type of funding can I receive to expand my business?
Certified businesses gain access to impact-focused venture capital and private investors who prefer deploying capital into regenerative enterprises rather than traditional banking or charitable giving. Funding models typically fall into two categories: equity-based (negotiating a share of your business) or debt-based (repayable capital with agreed terms).

What if I don’t have experience in business practices or scaling?
You won’t be navigating this alone. Our team includes experienced advisors who provide hands-on guidance to help you structure fair investor agreements, develop expansion strategies, and implement operational improvements tailored to your business stage.

Is this advisory service free?
There is no upfront cost. Instead, a 10% commission on the secured investment is allocated among the financial intermediary, the advising expert, and the Bioregional fund, ensuring alignment of incentives and sustained support for the network.

Are there any other costs associated with mentorship or expansion support?
If you request ongoing mentorship for business expansion or launching a new venture, we ask for a commitment of 10% of your net revenue once profitability begins. This contribution is shared between your mentor and the Bioregional fund, sustaining the ecosystem that enables your growth.

Do I have to pay to host international volunteers?
Volunteer support is provided at no cost. The only requirement is to cover their meals for the duration of their stay (structured as seven days a week, three meals daily). You may choose to host them directly in your home or workspace (highly recommended for cultural exchange) or provide a modest stipend so they can purchase meals at local restaurants.
